Shaking Up The Traditional Kitchen For 2021

Shaking Up The Traditional Kitchen For 2021

If I had a pound for every time a client asked me how to create a kitchen that will stand the test of time, I’d be on a beach with a cold beer right now.

Instead, I’m going to share the secrets of how you achieve a kitchen that is on-trend AND doesn’t go out of fashion when the next trend rolls in.

It’s actually pretty simple.

Merging The Old With The New

Adding a modern twist to a traditional kitchen design can have breath-taking results when done correctly, and because of its fusion of styles, it’s a real crowd-pleaser.

So, how do you achieve this?

The flagship of traditional design is the shaker kitchen. It has evolved through the ages and is still as popular today as it was when it originated.

Bursting with character and detail, they’re also extremely versatile and can be shaped to suit even the most modern homes. So it’s a great place to start.

Open Plan Living

We’re definitely seeing a rise in demand for open-plan living with our customers. This style lends itself to the modern way of living, so should be incorporated into your kitchen design.  Try adding a multi-functional element such as a breakfast bar or island.

State Of The Art Tech

Introducing some smart appliances is another way to inject a modern edge into a traditional shaker kitchen. Here are a few of our favourites at the moment:

  • Voice-controlled appliances that don’t need a human touch to operate (nearly every appliance has an option like this, from coffee machines to microwaves).
  • The NEFF Slide and Hide Oven – as famously appeared on the Great British Bake Off, the oven door disappears under the oven when you open it.
  • Dishwashers with floor illumination display – we love the Siemens range.

But if your client has set their heart on a cooking Aga or Burlington sink, don’t worry, I’m not finished yet!

Colourful Kitchens

Adding injections of colour and patterns are simple ways to keep a traditional kitchen feel fresh and modern. Mustard, Copper and Blush are really trendy right now.

Neutral tones are key to a traditional vibe, but that doesn’t mean they can’t teamed with something a bit more fun. When it comes to copper in particular, you can get lost in a wealth of exciting lighting and accessory choices.

Be bold with floor tiling and splashbacks too! We’re loving the retro designs at the moment, which you can see on the floor here.

Mixing Up Worktop

Wooden worktops look great in a traditional kitchen, but ice white quartz worktops are the best choice for a contemporary kitchen. Our advice? Choose both! This is demonstrated perfectly in the above kitchen.
