Quality is in the detail

Quality is in the detail

If you’re looking for quality in your new kitchen, there’s a pretty long list of things to avoid.

My bug-bear? The cam lock. Why? For two pretty major reasons:

It’s ineffective, and it’s ugly.

(Should I rewind and explain what a cam lock actually is?)

It’s a cylinder-shaped lock with a metal pin that holds parts of a cabinet together. But it’s not the best tool for the job.

Whenever you see a cam lock, you know that the cabinet’s basically a flat-pack unit that’s just been assembled for you.

Because the cam lock is weak, the unit might move once your cabinet’s fully loaded. Uh-oh.

And it’s not attractive. Honestly, you’ll notice it under the wall units and everyone else will too.

Thing is, it’s not just used in the budget kitchens. A lot of the big sellers use them too.

So if you want to get a truly decent product for your hard-earned cash, make sure you check the fastenings and say no to the cam lock.

The good news is that NOT ONE of Glotech’s kitchens or furniture features that little beast.

Seriously, none of them.

We’re real supporters of the good old “glued and doweled” method over here. And this is why:

  1. The fastenings become invisible so there’s no eyesores.
  2. Glued and doweled makes each and every carcass strong and stable.
  3. Glotech furniture lasts way longer than the cam-locked stuff, and it won’t lose its shape when it’s loaded either.

Quality is in the detail

No sign of a cam lock anywhere over here.
