How To Plan For A New Kitchen

How To Plan For A New Kitchen

Here’s a broad question we get asked a lot, when people are considering a kitchen redesign:

Where do I start?

From finalising your layout to choosing your finishing touches, we know there’s a lot to decide when you’re buying a new kitchen.

At Glotech Kitchens, we find the best way to tackle a kitchen redesign plan is by breaking it down into manageable steps, so we’ve created a short guide, that tells you exactly where to start and what to consider in the initial stages.

Evaluate Your Current Situation

Make a list of all the things you love about your current kitchen and all the things you hate. Here are a few questions to ask yourself:

– Do you have enough storage?
– Do you have adequate worktop space?
– Does the ambience in the space suit you, and does the flow of the kitchen work?
– Do you have the right seating?
– Do you have the right lighting?
– Do your kitchen appliances work for you and are the located correctly?

Because a typical kitchen lasts 15+ years, the chances are you want to change a lot, and this will form the starting point of your kitchen redesign plan.

Create a Budget

Deciding on a budget is a bit like planning a wedding or holiday (remember those?!), there are many things to consider that will all equate to your final figure.

Before you start adding elements up, it’s important to have an idea of what you think your top line budget is. That in itself isn’t always straightforward, and it’s something we can give you guidance on.

Then starting with the big things, (your must-haves), start to allocate portions of your budget to each element. Include things like:

– Any structural/renovation work
– The kitchen furniture
– The work surface
– The kitchen appliances
– The installation

When you have this estimate, you can work out what you have left to spend on everything else. Include also a ‘buffer’ for anything that crops up along the way – like that wine cooler you now realise you can’t live without.

Kitchen Layout

We’re not just talking about where you want the dishwasher here.

It’s essential to think about what you want from your kitchen. If you’re dreaming of an open plan space, you might need to knock down some walls. If you want to incorporate an island, you may need to reconfigure your wall units and seating area.

There are plenty of ideas to consider here like breakfast bars and storage solutions that can revolutionise your original space. That’s something we’re masters of here at Glotech. We’ll often have kitchen design ideas that you may not have thought possible, and help you make the best possible use of the space you’re working within.

Kitchen Style

Now the fun starts!

Do you want modern or traditional? Minimalistic or charismatic? Urban or chic? Or no idea? The possibilities are endless but don’t let that scare you, have fun with it – there’s no rush to decide on a kitchen design.

The internet is a gold mine of inspiration – have a look at our kitchen ranges here for a starting point. Why not create a Pinterest mood board and share your ideas with us?

The Details

Once you’ve mastered the basics of your kitchen, it’s time to add the details.

Decide what colours you like and what worktops and splashbacks you want to team with them.

Next up, is appliances.

If you’re a keen cook, we have a world of fantastic ovens and hobs that will really blow your mind, but if you’re looking for something budget-friendly and easy on the eye, we’ve got kitchen appliances for that too.

You see that what makes Glotech better than our competition. We are able to supply virtually any make or model of appliance. Plus we have the expertise and knowledge.

By the way, we are still working from home on kitchen designs and plans, so if you’d like to discuss any of the above or something else in detail – give us a shout.
